Going for Donuts!
I can’t take credit for coming up with this but I am determined that “I'm going for donuts!” becomes a well-known saying for when you want to express that you’ve had it up to here.
Work with me - there is a story behind it.
A former co-worker of mine, at the end of a particularly trying day, announced that it was the type of day that made her want to go for donuts. It turned out she was referring to a peculiar episode from a previous job (which was a bit disappointing, because I thought she meant we were going to get donuts, which are known to be an effective antidote to a bad day).
In this previous workplace, they had a new staff member; she had picked up the new job well, was fitting in just fine and getting along with everyone.
The building they worked in was near a donut shop, so people would often pop out to get some donuts for morning tea. One morning, after being there a few weeks, the new staff member announced “I’m going for donuts. Does anyone want anything while I’m out?” No one needed anything so off she went.
A bit of time passed, and a few people thought she seemed to be taking longer than usually needed to get donuts. More time passed and she still hadn’t returned and people started asking questions as to where she had gone and where might she be. They were starting to worry and called her mobile number but there was no answer. The rest of the day went by and she didn’t turn up. And they never got their morning tea.
Although it was somehow ascertained - possibly by the pay office - that she was okay, there was never any explanation given as to why she upped and left, whether it was planned or just a spur of the moment thing. Somewhere along the line she had decided this job wasn't for her, went for donuts and just kept on going.
So next time you’re having a bad day at work and need to adequately explain just how much you don’t want to be there, tell your colleagues “That’s it - I’m going for donuts!”
